The 1% SolutionTM

What’s the difference between winners and everyone else? Winners capitalize on an open secret that puts them light years ahead of the competition.

The open secret?

While consistent winners are almost never 100% better than their competition, they are almost always 1% better at 100’s of things.

Tom’s research into Olympic medal winners shows the same thing.

In the men’s downhill at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, for example, the difference between first place and fourth place was 1.08 seconds or .9%. In all Olympic events, the difference between a gold medal and no medal averages about 1%. Between 1st and 10th place, the average is about 2%.

What Winners Do

Think of winners such as Lance Armstrong. While he’s an amazing athlete with some very singular competitive advantages, he’s simply not 100% better than those he consistently defeated. He is, however, 1% better in 100’s of ways - including training, intensity, focus, motivation, commitment, and nutrition just to name a few.

The same thing in the corporate world. Whether it’s sales reps, manufacturing managers, engineers, entrepreneurs, or others, the key to building sustainable profits lies not in trying to be 100% better than your competition; it lies in simply being 1% better in everything you do.

Everyone Can Win

The issue becomes how do you permanently place the idea of being 1% better in 100’s of things into everyone’s head and then make sure that the 1% takes hold. That’s where Tom comes in. He’s studied individuals and companies that have mastered the art of execution and has found what’s critical to making The 1% SolutionTM a way of life.

Here’s what’s covered in this session:

  1. What The 1% SolutionTM is, how it works, and its relationship to Olympic performance.

  2. How to identify actionable leverage points where small shifts in behavior can produce massive shifts in performance results.

  3. The deceptively simple step that unleashes an avalanche of improved performance and why most of us forget to take this easy-to-do action.

Tom points out that anyone can improve something by 1% - usually within 24 hours and certainly within five days. He reminds them the difference between a Gold Medal and no medal averages about 1%. Then he pulls out his Olympic torch, talks about the Olympic spirit, and points out that the difference between the winners and everyone else is not that the winners are 100% better than everyone else - they’re just 1% better in a variety of very important things.

He concludes by challenging them to continue improving something by 1% every week.

If you’re looking for a simple straightforward presentation that ignites performance, accelerates sustainable growth, and gets everyone fully engaged in contributing to success, Tom’s the choice for you.

(Note: if you’d like to arrange some small group photos with the torch, let us know and we’ll see if Tom’s schedule can accommodate that request.)
